Prevention of accidents and injuries

Accidents and injuries can happen anywhere: at home, at the workplace, and on road.

Workplace accidents are unfortunately a common occurrence around the globe. Over 2.7 million people die annually from work-related injuries or diseases. Occupational health refers to existence of conditions that make workplaces safe for people to operate in. This can include ensuring that measures are put in place that minimize the risk of physical injury, ensuring proper protective equipment for workers, and work sites that are hygienic and free of toxic chemicals and substances. Occupational health also includes ensuring access to health services in case of accident or injury. However, over 70% of workers around the world are uninsured against the health risks that come with workplaces.

Homes can also be dangerous and pose their own risks of accident and injuries. Stairs, windows, electricity, heating, stoves and other elements of housing all come with some risk. These risks cannot be eliminated but can be mitigated through proper architecture and building design mandated by proper construction guidelines and regulations. For families with young children, it is particularly important to pay attention to the safety of their homes such as by ensuring that children do not have access to sharp objects or poisonous substances and that their homes are free of tripping hazards.
